Common DVD Problems

The internet carries hundreds of accounts of commercial DVDs with problems. You've no doubt discovered DVDs displaying problems, some obvious and others minor but annoying.  The following is a list of problems that we try to solve in every master disc we create:
  • Flickering menus or unstable menus
  • Menu highlights don't stand out clearly
  • Jagged-looking button highlights
  • Out-of-sync audio track
  • Menu or buttons not title safe
  • Interlaced video shows "combing" on progressive displays
  • Disc freezes or stutters on cheap players
  • Navigation is a pain, i.e. after any function the disc always reverts to first button on top menu
  • Mistakes in button programing, i.e. buttons jump to wrong video
  • Buttons on menus reach "dead ends" where nothing happens
  • Conventional remote control operations not followed
  • No accessibility for hearing or sight impaired viewers
  • Poor navigation planning
  • Poor interface design
  • DVD-9 layer break interrupts the program unnecessarily
  • Menu design doesn't coordinate with packaging design or film titles

A DVD correctly authored is a thing to behold. A DVD that is not can easily become your worst nightmare.
