A Great Film Deserves a Great Sound Mix

A good sound mix (or absence thereof) can easily make or break a production. Just as coherent sound design adds authenticity, and a well-crafted soundtrack helps shape the story, a good sound mix puts all the elements together into the best possible presentation.

Our mix turned out better than we ever thought it could. As a music documentary, our film relies as much on its sound as on visuals. We were concerned that our roughly recorded concert music and low-fi feed would present an insurmountable barrier, but Modulus was able to smooth out all the rough edges and create masterful audio from less-than-perfect raw material.

AN EXCEPTIONAL WORK ENVIRONMENT

Sound Mixing at Modulus means working in comfort. It means seeing your film presented on a color calibrated 52" LCD screen in an accurate home theater-like setting and being guided through the process by an experienced engineer. Sound Design, sfx, music, and dubs can be added as needed. All work is fully-recallable and a careful review/QC process allows for stepwise, and often unforseen improvements. Our Audio Suite is uncharacteristically uncluttered; allowing one to more easily concentrate on aesthetic decisions.

PROFESSIONAL POLISH

It's fairly common to see films or TV programs where one cannot follow the dialogue track. Without the right presence, dialogue can get easily obscured by music or other sound elements and 'not translate' faithfully. Our experience with music mastering give us an edge. From theatrical to home theater to iPod, Modulus mixes are EQ'd with the right amount of presence - the mixes are spectrally and dynamically balanced to deliver consistent performance in all playback situations.

64-BIT AUDIO MIRACLES

All audio operations are done at extremely high resolution, which allows for silky-smooth filtering and dynamics, and miraculous restoration of tracks that may have been once thought unrecoverable. Audiocube^tm has been recognized as the world's best toolset for audio restoration and is used by top Hollywood post facilities like Chase Productions as well as the Smitsonian Institution and U.S. Library of Congress. In plain terms we can reduce hiss, hum, pops, clicks, boom hits, camera motor noise, fix distorted tracks, and even remove sounds that are embedded in audio tracks in ways that most seasoned audio engineers have never even dreamed of.

MIX + SPLITS

Some clients want to retain an amount of control on their own editing systems, but still want the benefit of Modulus restoration and mix capabilities. Final mixes files then, can be delivered with "splits" – submixes that comprise dialogue, ambience, music, and SFX. This way minor adjustments can be easily accomplished on a client's own editing systems.

FREE SET UP TIME

All sessions include up to an hour of uncharged set up time. The goal is to work out formatting kinks so that on the day of your scheduled session, when you enter the room you are handed a notepad (would you like a cup of coffee?) and you can get right to work. We use OMFs from Avid and Final Cut Pro, so we can begin refining the audio mix right where your editing session left off.

BOOKING OPTIONS

Sound Mix sessions at Modulus can be booked in one of three ways: 1) HOURLY RATE, 2) in discounted BLOCKS of time, or as 3) FLEX-TIME sessions which are discounted unattended sessions.
